A huge recovery operation is under way in the central Philippines after the region was blasted by a typhoon packing winds of 235-kilometres an hour.

Although the latest official death toll in more than 100, authorities predict that will rise.

One of the hardest-hit areas is the city Tacloban (tac-LOH'-bahn), where hundreds of buildings are obliterated.

The storm is now headed towards Vietnam with winds of 175-kilometres an hour.
